Apple will reportedly launch a new version of the iPad in March. If the rumour is true, this will be barely five months since the launch of the 4th generation iPad in October. It's an exemplary device, but Apple is apparently seeking to improve on the design — taking cues from the 7.9" iPad mini, which was launched to a good reception this year. The revamped 5th generation iPad, it is said, will be lighter and thinner than the current version.
Exact dimensions have not been indicated, but it is speculated that there will be a 2 mm reduction in thickness, a 4 mm reduction in width, and a 17 mm reduction in height. This would place the dimensions of the new iPad at 224.5 mm (h) x 181.7 mm (w) x 7.4 mm (d). It is safe to consider that a hardware overhaul is on the cards; rather than just revamping the design, Apple will try to cram in more components. Note that the 3rd and 4th generation iPads were thicker because of additional circuitry for the Retina display.
The report (at Macotakara.jp, above) mentions that an upgraded iPad mini is also in the works. It will supposedly sport a Retina display, and will be powered by an A6X CPU — like the 4th generation iPad.
It is not surprising to see Apple speeding up the release cycles of these products in the face of increasing competition from Android tablets, and the large number of Windows 8 tablets that are expected to show up in 2013. We hope that along with reducing dimensions, Apple will take care of potential overheating with the faster hardware.
