We are used to LinkedIn insisting on a premium membership to allow users to send 'Inmails'. Now the social networking giant Facebook is testing a new revenue opportunity, wherein users will be charged $1 (approx Rs 55) for sending messages to the 'inbox' of someone who is not a 'friend', in FB's parlance. Currently, Facebook message are divided in two sections — Inbox and Others. Messages from people on your friend list go in the "Inbox" section, while the rest of it will appear under "Others". With this new service, people will have an option to pay to have a message delivered to the "Inbox" instead of being market as "Other" for people they don't know on FB.
Although, the final price has not been decided yet, Facebook is looking for an "optimum" cost. To limit the potential for spam, users will only be receiving one of these paid and re-routed messages per week. According to Facebook, the service will be useful in situations where someone needs to send a one-time message to a user whom they are not friends with, example, to contact someone about a job opportunity.
While this paid service, if implemented, may work for the sender who is very keen to the the receiver's attention, it is likely to be an annoyance for the receiver. We wonder if this would result in lesser number of "fraandship" requests to girls on Facebook
