After Instagram, Facebook now looks to buy Whatsapp

According to a report on TechCrunch, Facebook is in talks to buy Whatsapp. The report states the multiplatform mobile messaging app that has been one of the runaway success stories for ad-free, paid services, has been in talks to be acquired by Facebook, according to sources close to the matter.

Whatsapp has been one of the biggest success stories as far as messaging apps are concerned.  At the end of October  2011, the messaging service had announced that they now saw over 1 billion messages being sent in a single day.

So what does 1 billion messages signify. According to the Whatsapp blogpost That is 41,666,667 messages an hour, 694,444 messages a minute, and 11,574 messages a second.

Neither Whatsapp nor Facebook have responded to this story. But if Facebook does buy Whatsapp it will be another indicator of how important mobile is for the social networking giant. Facebook recently acquired Instagram, the popular photo-editing app.

Facebook’s Q3 results for 2012 showed that mobile ads had worked for the site. Nearly 14 percent of the revenue for the site came from mobile ads. “I want to dispel this myth that Facebook can’t make money on mobile,” said CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a conference call with analysts. “This may (have seemed) true earlier this year because we hadn’t started trying yet.”

Revenue for Facebook rose 32 percent to $1.26 billion, which was higher than the $1.23 billion that analysts had expected.

Whatsapp is available for Android, iPhone, Windows, BlackBerry and Symbian users.
