Cops to launch app for women in distress

As crimes against women increase, the Mumbai police are launching their first mobile app. Called 'ICE (In Case of Emergency): Mumbai Police', the app will allow a person in distress to send out immediate text alerts to specified contacts.

An officer said the easy-tooperate app will be available for free on the police's website. After downloading it, users have to create an SOS contact list, with phone numbers of family and friends. In an emergency, a user has to merely press an SOS button and the app will send out a text-with the words "I'm in distress, please help" -to all the numbers mentioned in the SOS list. GPS coordinates of the user's phone will accompany the text, said Mukund Pawar of the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell.

Developed by KPMG, the app will be launched by police chief Satyapal Singh on Saturday , the first day of the Cyber Safety Week. Initially available for only Android devices, its BlackBerry and iOS versions will be released soon.

"The police are just launching the app. The distress message will be sent to the listed contacts and not to us. This is because at times people in distress are not in a state to talk to cops. Once the specified contacts receive the alert, they can inform the police," said additional commissioner of police (crime) Niket Kaushik.

"Law enforcement agencies can contain losses only on arriving at the scene," said Nitin Khanapurkar of KPMG. "This app will create awareness about the preparations for the first response in emergencies."
